Dynamic Narratives in Print: Exploring the Art of Waiting – A Curated Design Journey

Waiting is an unavoidable aspect of everyday life, yet it remains a relatively understudied area in design research. This project aims to explore the emotional experiences associated with waiting in various contexts, such as queues, public transportation stops, and communication delays.By investigating the phenomenon of the "waiting time paradox" – where perceived waiting time exceeds actual time – we hope to shed light on the factors contributing to negative emotions like boredom, frustration, and anxiety.

I conducted an experiment to visualize the waiting time paradox by waiting at a bus stop for the next bus to arrive. During this time, I took a series of photos at regular intervals, capturing the passage of time as I waited. This experiment allowed me to effectively convey the experience of the waiting time paradox to the reader and add depth to the book. By collecting a large quantity of photos and combining them into a single, stretched image, I created a visual representation of the paradox that effectively conveyed the feeling of time stretching.

I experimented with different typefaces to evoke a range of emotions, aiming to provide readers with a varied emotional experience while they read.

In the design of the page layout for the waiting book, a decision was made to use a ratio of 30%,70% and central view positioning for all layouts. This decision was based on the idea that a central view position and a balanced ratio of negative to positive space would create a comfortable and effective reading experience for the reader.A 30%,70% ratio was used, meaning that the negative space, or whitespace, on the page made up 30% of the total area, while the positive space, or text and visual elements, made up the remaining 70%. It was felt that this balance of negative and positive space helped to create a sense of structure and clarity in the layout, making it easier for the reader to follow the content of the book.

For printing, I employed a zig-zag printing technique as part of our design system, allowing for the utilization of both sides of each page simultaneously.

I decided to utilize zigzag folding to instill a sense of continuity and capture the essence of waiting. Inspired by the concept of the waiting time paradox, I believed this technique would effectively immerse the reader in the experience.Implementing this method involved printing a single file on a 10-meter paper and folding it in a zigzag pattern. This dynamic folding created an interactive element, guiding the reader through the content. I aimed to evoke a feeling of movement and progression, enhancing the reading experience with a unique and engaging design element. The use of zigzag folding in my design helped to convey the essence of waiting, providing readers with an immersive and impactful journey through the book.
